Do you take on work experience students?
I don't currently take on work experience students. I'm a mother of two working from a home office as a sole trader.
Do you have any advice on how to become a freelance graphic designer?
If you are thinking of going out on your own, first try gaining at least a couple of years experience working for a company. Have a look at the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) website, it has lots of interesting articles and information for the benefit of graphic designers and creative professionals.
What is the work situation in Australia for graphic designers and multimedia developers?
I am asked this question quite frequently and it's hard to answer as I'm certainly not an authority on this subject and of course everyone's experience finding work is different. I often look through the careers section in the papers and, from my observations, most weeks a handful of graphic design and multimedia jobs are advertised both in the private and public sectors.
Can you suggest a good system of pricing for freelance graphic design services?
AGDA has published an informative article on pricing strategies.
Can I see a draft design for my project before I decide whether to commission you?
My online portfolio will assist you in determining if the style and quality of my design is suitable for your needs. The practice of providing pre-engagement design concepts is known as 'free pitching'. More information on Free Pitching ...
How does Smudge receive new commissions for work?
Usually through referrals from satisfied customers. I also receive enquiries via the online contact form or by email requesting quotes or more specific information. Sometimes I hear from people who have seen Smudge credited on printed materials or websites.
What obstacles did you face setting up Smudge?
The hardest obstacles were setting up the initial framework and business processes including tax logs, terms and conditions, liability insurance, business registration, business banking etc. These are the least fun things about owning your own business, it takes a lot of research and perseverance because each business has its unique needs. The creative industries don't slip easily into the mould of a mainstream business. There is no one-stop shop that will handle it all for you.
